invites

Students in Grades 7, 8, 9

to attend our Fall 2011 Sessions. The participation is free and open to any interested student. To register and reserve your seat, email Dr. Bogdan Suceava at bsuceava@fullerton.edu

Our Fall 2011 meetings will take place in McCarthy Hall, room 476, on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Our schedule is:

Saturday, September 24 10:00 - noon

Saturday, October 8 10:00 - noon

Saturday, October 22 10:00 - noon

Saturday, November 5 10:00 - noon

Mathematical Circles are not usual lectures, but meetings where young mathematicians discuss themes related to problems assigned in American Mathematical Competitions, USA Mathematical Olympiads or other competitions for gifted students. The mathematical content of every meeting is self-contained and independent of the other sessions. In particular, our mathematical circle will discuss problems assigned in the New York-based Abacus Competition, which incorporates the tradition of the Hungarian school of mathematics. We will cover problems assigned in Olympiads all over the world and that are compatible with the current California curriculum. We also encourage the participating students to solve and submit to editors their solutions to problems assigned in Gazeta Matematica (a monthly established in 1895), a journal which incorporates the experience in education of the Romanian school of mathematics. Participating students will receive further informative materials.

Additionally, our Department will host:

Tuesday, November 15
AMERICAN MATHEMATICAL COMPETITIONS (grades 8 and below)
AMC 8 in room MH 476
Time: 4:30 pm - 5:10 pm (just 40 minutes)
